B2f - Natural Selection Flashcards
0
Q
Who came up with the natural selection theory?
A
Charles Darwin
1
Q
What is natural selection?
A
When certain individuals are better suited to their environment they are more likely to survive and breed, passing on their characteristics to the next generation.
2
Q
What were Darwin’s stages?
A
- Variation (within any species there is variation, e.g blonde/brown hair)
- Babies (species produce more offspring that survive
- Competition (compete over resources, best adapted survive)
- Reproduction (those who survive pass on their genes)
- Speciation (new species over time)
3
Q
What was Jean Baptiste de Lamarck’s theory?
A
He believed that we acquire characteristics over time and that there was no genetic basis.
4
Q
What is speciation?
A
When a two groups of a species evolve differently in their habitats - e.g foxes and arctic foxes, red & grey squirrels
Over time they become so different, they are no longer the same species.
5
Q
How can a species get separated?
A
Continental drift, natural disasters
