B2.4 Organisms and environment Flashcards
Define reproducible
Results that can be produced again by someone else
Define repeatable
Doing an experiment again to get the same results
What are the disadvantages of counting nests to estimate the bird population?
- Nests may be old
- Young birds reusing old nests
What are two types of random sampling?
1) Large area sampling
2) small area sampling
How would you sample a large area?
You divide an area on a map and randomly pick co-ordinates to place a quadrat. You then repeat this for a mean
How would you sample a small area?
You would throw a piece of paper behind you and wherever it lands you would place the quadrat. You then repeat this for a mean
How would you investigate leaf size change on a bush? [4]
- Use systematic sampling
- Draw around the leaf on graph paper
- Add together number of squares covered by the leaf, including half squares
- Write results in a table to compare the change
What is the affect of temperature on the distribution of living organisms?
It has to be the ideal temperature
Different organisms can survive in different temperatures
What is the affect of nutrients available on the distribution of living organisms?
The more nutrients available the more growth and energy in a living organism
What is the affect of light intensity on the distribution of living organisms?
The more light there is the more growth and energy produced due to the increase of photosynthesis
What is the affect of Oxygen availability on the distribution of living organisms?
There is more oxygen to respire. If there is no oxygen organisms can’t respire and therefore the population decreases
What is the affect of Carbon dioxide availability on the distribution of living organisms?
Carbon dioxide is needed for plants and algae to respire
What is the affect of Water availability on the distribution of living organisms?
If there is too much water organisms will drown but if there is too little then organisms will dehydrate
