B2.2 Tissues, Organs, Organ systems Flashcards
Define tissue
Cells with similar structures and functions working together to form a particular job
Name characteristics of a tissue [4]
- Large surface area
- Thin walls
- Permeable surface (allows liquids through it)
- Has a good blood supply
What is a waxy cuticle used for in a plant?
Stops water loss (usually found on desert plants)
What is a palisade cell used for in a plant?
Photosynthesis
What does spongy mesophyll do in a plant?
Allows carbon dioxide to the palisade cells
What does the xylem and phloem do in a plant?
Transports water and sugars
What do guard cells do in a plant?
They act like doors to let carbon dioxide in
They also stop water loss
What do the epidermis do in a plant?
They protect the plant
What does muscular tissue do?
Contracts and relaxes to make bones move
What does glandular tissue do?
Produces enzymes and hormones
What does epithelial tissue do?
Covers some parts of the body
Name an organ which contains muscular, glandular and epithelial tissue and explain what each of them do
Stomach
muscular tissue - churns contents
epithelial tissue - covers inside and outside
glandular tissue - produces digestive enzymes
Define differentiated cell
Cells that are specialised for a particular job
Name organs which are made up of glandular tissue
[3]
Stomach, Pancreas, Small intestine
Define organ
Tissues with similar jobs working together
