B2.3 Photosynthesis Flashcards
light energy
Carbon Dioxide + Water =============>
Glucose + Oxygen
Where is light absorbed during photosynthesis?
In the green substance chlorophyll which is found in chloroplasts in plant cells and algae
What is the light energy used for?
Converting carbon dioxide and water into glucose
What is released as a product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen
What may limit the rate of photosynthesis?
Shortage of light, low temperature and shortage of carbon dioxide
Any one of light, temperature and availability of carbon dioxide may…
Be a factor that limits photosynthesis
What can the glucose produced by photosynthesis be converted into?
Insoluble storage for starch
What do plant cells use some of the glucose produced for?
Respiration
What else can glucose be used for in plants and algae?
Produce fat and oil for storage, produce cellulose which strengthens the cell wall and to produce proteins
What else do plants use to produce proteins?
Nitrate ions absorbed from the soil
What ideal conditions are enhanced in a greenhouse?
Temperature- greenhouses trap heat
Light- the glass lets light through and at night artificial light is used
Carbon Dioxide- a paraffin heater may be used to increase the level of carbon dioxide
Enclosed- the plants being inclosed in a green house keeps them free from pests and diseases
Fertilisers- can be added to provide the minerals needed for healthy growth
