B2.2 + B2.3 Flashcards
What is a species?
A species is a group of similar organisms that are capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring
What is the binomial system?
Species are known by a two- part name;
first name is known as genus, a group name for closely related species
Second name identifies a single species
What is variation?
Differences between individuals
Why might some closely- related species look different?
They live in different habitats
Why do some organisms that are not closely related share features if they live in the same habitat?
Ecological links- two unrealted species are not classified together, but need to solve the same environmental problems
What is a hybrid?
An organism resulting from two parents of different species
Classifying asexual organisms?
Bacteria do not reproduce with one another, but biologists still calssify them as different species based on their characteristics
What is a food chain?
A way of showing what organimss eat, showing the flow of food and energy from one organism to the next.
What is a trophic level?
Feeding level in a food chain
What are producers?
Organisms such as plants, algae and some bacteria, that produce their own food. They always starta food chain
What are consumers?
Cosumers are organisms that eat other organisms.
What are herbivores?
Animals that eat plants. Primary consumers. Second link in the food chain
What are carnivores?
Animals that eat other animals. Secondary consumers. Third link in the food chain
What are omnivores?
Animals that eat both animals and plants
What are detritivores?
Organisms that eat dead material such as dead leaves
What are decomposers?
Decomposers decay the bodies of other organisms, but they do not eat them
What is a food web?
Several interlinked food chains.
