B2.1: Grouping Organisms Flashcards
What is classification?
Sorting organisms into grouos according to their characteristics
State the order of the kingdoms
(Top to bottom)
Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
Plants characteristics and examples?
- made of many cells
- cells walls made of cellulose
- cells contain chloroplasts
- use light to make food by photosynthesis
- grow in a spreading manner
Eg) flower, moss, grass
Animal characteristics and examples?
- made of many cells
- no chloroplasts
- unable to make food so feed on other organisms
- compact body shape
- most are capable of moving around
Eg fish, humans, insects
Fungi characterstics and examples?
- cells walls made of chitin
- reproduce by forming spores
- do not photosynthesise
Eg mushrooms, yeast
Protocista characteristics and examples?
- mostly single- celled (expect the large algae)
Example) alage
Prokaryotes characterstics and examples?
No nucleus
Eg) bacteria
What is natural classification?
Based on evolutionary links, so organisms are grouped together if they have common ancestry
What is artificial classification?
Based on visible features, making a group of organisms easier to identify.
