B2.14: Humans And Pollution Flashcards
What is exponential growth?
Means that the more indivduals there are in a population, the faster it grows
What effects are there of the worlds population increasing?
- shortage of food is some countries
- more land is used for farming and buildings
- more pollution is being produces
- worlds resources are being used up too fast

Discuss the pollutant sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides
Source- burning of fossil fuels
Effects environment as it dissolves in rain to form acid rain:
- damages plant leaves
- acidifies lakes
- changes minerals available in water supplies
- causes bronchitis
Discuss the pollutant carbon dioxide
Burining of fossil fuels
Dissolves in rain to form acid rain
Also a greenhouse gas which keeps more heat in the atmosphere, lading to global warming
Discuss the pollutant CFCS
Aerosols and refigerator coolants
Destroys the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere, allowing uv radiation through- skin cancers
