B2.12: Surviving In A Changing Environment Flashcards
1
Q
What is evolution?
A
Gradual change in an organism over time.
2
Q
What is natural selection?
A
Mechanism by which species evolve. The best adapted individuals are more likely to survive and reproduce, and so pass on their genes.
- Large populations
- Survival
- The fittest
- Passing on the advantage
3
Q
How are new species formed?
A
- Populations become seperated by some barrier (geogrqphic/ behavioural)
- Over time, each group evolves differently in diff conditons. Longer they are seperated, more diff they become
- Two sub-populations have changes so much that they can no longer interbreed. They formed seperate but closely related species.
