B2.1.1 g-j) What is plant ultrastructure like? Flashcards
Cell wall
Support and structure
Made of polysaccharide cellulose
Function as a carbohydrate store- varying amount of cellulose it holds
Does not seal off a cell completely
pores within the walls- plasmodesmata
Plasmodesmata- connect 2 cells together by their cytoplasm- enabling the exchange & transport of substances
Vacuoles
Permanent vacuoles- only plant cells
Consists of a membrane- tonoplast (filled with sap)
Keeps the cell firm
Vacuole full of sap- turgid
Chloroplasts
Use carbon dioxide, water & light energy to build sugars
Present in all green plants
Surrounded by a double membrane
Filled with a liquid- stroma
Contains stacks of thylakoid membranes- grana
Thylakoid membranes- site of photosynthesis
