B2.1 - Supplying The Cell Flashcards
What is Diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration .
They move down a concentration gradient.
Diffusion continues until the concentration of the particles is the same everywhere.
Where does diffusion occur in the body?
All your cells need glucose and oxygen for respiration. Your blood transports these substances around the body and the diffuse them into the cells that are needed.
Diffusion is one process by which particles enter and leave cells. They pass through the cell membrane from a region of high concentration to low concentration.
What factors affect the rate of diffusion?
Distance - decrease the distance the particles need to move
Concentration gradient - (increase )the steeper the concentration gradient, the greater the net movement of particles.
Surface area- (increase) this allows more space for diffusion, so more particles can move in a period of time.
