B1.3- Respiration Flashcards
What is a metabolic rate?
The speed that energy is transferred from chemical stores in food.
What happens to carbohydrates in your body?
Inside your body, carbohydrase enzymes break down carbohydrates.
What is the enzyme that breaks down starch?
Amylase
Is carbohydrate a polymer
Yes .
What is protein formed from?
Amino acids
What happens to proteins in your body?
In your body, protease enzymes break down proteins into amino acids.
What do we use lipids for?
We use it for insulation.
What happens to lipids in your body?
In your body, lipase enzymes breaks down lipids into fatty acids and glycerol.
What is exothermic reaction?
A chemical reaction that releases energy from the reactants
What is meant by ATP?
Secondary energy store, that can carry energy around the body.
Universal energy currency molecule.
What is aerobic respiration?
A series of reactants that releases or transfers energy stored in glucose using oxygen.
Equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
ATP is used for:
To build larger molecules from smaller ones
For movement
To stay warm
To operate protein pumps in active transport
Where does aerobic respiration take place in?
Mitochondria
How does anaerobic respiration occur?
Occurs without air or without oxygen .
