B2 – The Function of the Muscular System Flashcards
Contraction Type, Fibre Type, Antagonistic Pairs, All or None Law
What are the 3 contraction types?
Concentric
Eccentric
Isometric
What is a concentric contraction?
When the muscles shorten in size and are flexing.
What is an eccentric contraction?
When the muscles lengthen in size and are relaxing.
What is an isometric contraction?
When the muscles of the body aren’t flexing or relaxing but are still working at a high intensity.
What are the three muscle fibre types?
Type I
Type IIa
Type IIx
What are the 5 characteristics of type I muscle fibres?
Slow to fatigue
Low amount of force
Small in muscle size
Red in colour
5k, 10k, Marathon
What are the 5 characteristics of type IIa muscle fibres?
Moderate to fatigue
Moderate amount of force
Moderate in muscle size
Red in colour
Jogging, Swimming
What are the 5 characteristics of type IIx muscle fibres
Quick to fatigue
High amount of force
Large in muscle size
White in colour
100m, 200m, Weight Lifting
