B1e Flashcards
what is a depressant?
it slows down the brain activity, for example alcohol and solvents.
what is a hallucinogen?
it alters what we see and hear, for example LSD
what is a painkiller?
it blocks nerve impulses, for example paracetamol and aspirin.
what is a performance enhancer?
it improves muscle development, for example anabolic steroids
what is a stimulant?
it increases brain activity for example ecstasy and caffeine.
what is nicotine?
it is a stimulant that affects the synapses (junction of 2 neurones) by causing more neurotransmitter substances to cross to the next neurone.
what is the basis of legal classification of drugs?
they are classified from class A to class C. A are the most dangerous with serious penalties for possession or dealing, whereas C is the least dangerous with lightest penalty.
explain the effect of stimulants on the nervous system.
they cause more neurotransmitter molecules to diffuse across the synapse.
explain the effect of depressants on the nervous system. (COMMON 6 MARK Q)
they stop the next neurone sending nerve impulses, they bind to the receptor molecules that are needed to respond to the neurotransmitter molecules.
