B1a Flashcards
healthy
being free from disease
how can you measure fitness?
strength, flexibility, stamina, agility, speed.
fitness
the ability to do physical activity
systolic pressure
the maximum pressure the heart produces
systollic pressure
the maximum pressure the heart produces
diastolic pressure
the blood pressure between heart beats
what can high blood pressure cause?
blood vessels to burst in the brain causing a stroke
what can low blood pressure cause?
poor circulation, dizziness and fainting
what can saturated fats (eg cholesterol) do?
they can stick to the walls of arteries. this is called a plaque and it can restrict bloodflow. causing heart attack
what happens when salt leaves the body?
the body retains too much water which causes more blood to be pumped at a higher pressure.
what happens if a small blood vessel bursts in the kidney?
the kidney can fail
how are chances of heart disease increased?
high blood pressure, smoking, lots of saturated fat and sugar
what effect does carbon monoxide have on the body?
it reduces the amount of oxygen carried by the blood causing the heart rate to INCREASE to make sure enough oxygen gets to all parts of the body and puts extra STRESS on HEART
how does the heart work?
- the heart muscle contracts to make it beat.
- this squeezes the blood through the blood vessels called ARTERIES.
- the blood in the arteries is under pressure
- it needs to be under pressure so it can reach all parts of the body
- this is important because the blood carries food and oxygen to cells all around the body.
