B1c Flashcards
how to prevent spread of malaria?
drain all stagnant water so no mosquitoes can lay eggs, spray insecticide and take lariam to kill protozoa in blood.
what are the four different pathogens?
fungi (eg athletes foot)
bacterial (cholera)
viral (flu)
protozoa (malaria)
parasite
the thing that causes harm to the host
host
the animal or human that suffers from the disease
vector
an animal that carries the micro organisms that cause the disease without suffering from the disease itself
what is a vaccination?
when you are injected with a harmless PATHOGEN. the ANTIGENS it carries trigger an immune response with white blood cells producing ANTIBODIES
describe how malaria is spread.
- female mosquitoes feed on human blood
- some plasmodium parasites (which cause malaria) are left in the hosts blood.
- they feed on red blood cells causing a fatal fever
what is cancer?
it is a result of cells dividing out of control.
the new cells may be odd shapes and form tumours.
benign tumour cells eg warts are slow to divide and harmless.
malignant tumours are cancerous and spread throughout the body.
