B1.9 Active transport Flashcards
What does active transport allow?
Active transport allows us to move substances from an are of low concentration to an area of high concentration
Why is active transport important?
As it is widely used in cells… eg mineral ions in the soil, such as nitrate ions, are usually found in very dilute solutions.
Give an example of when something is actively transported against a high concentration gradient:
Sugar such as glucose can be sucked out of your gut and kidney tubes into your blood, this is often done against a high concentrated gradient.
What does active transport allow?
Root hairs to absorb mineral ions, required for healthy growth from very dilute solutions in the soil against a concentrated gradient.
