B1.10 Exchanging materials Flashcards
1
Q
What is the surface area to volume ratio?
A
The SA to V ratio is bigger when the size of the organism is smaller but if the organism is bigger then the SA to V ratio will be smaller
2
Q
Why can’t gases and food molecules reach every cell inside the organisms by simple diffusion?
A
Due to the surface area to volume ratio
3
Q
Why do single celled organisms have a relatively large SA to V ratio?
A
So all necessary exchanges can take place over this surface
4
Q
What do exchange surfaces usually consist of?
A
A large surface are, thin walls which give short diffusion didtances
5
Q
What adaptation do multicellular organisms have
A
Many organs are specialised with effective exchange surfaces
