B1.2: Animal And Plant Cells Flashcards
What is the nucleus?
Controls all activity that takes place in and around the cell
The cytoplasm?
A liquid gel in which the organelles are suspended and where most of the chemical reactions needed for life takes place
The cell membrane?
Controls the passage of substances such as glucose and mineral ions into the cells, also controls the movement of substances out of the cells
The mitochondria?
Structures in the cytoplasm where aerobic respiration
The ribosomes?
Where protein synthesis takes place, making all of the proteins needed in the cells
Chloroplasts?
Found in all of the green parts of the plant, because they contain chlorophyll, this absorbs light from the plants to make food by photosynthesis. A single chloroplast is around 3-5 micrometres long.
A permanent vacuole?
Is a space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap, it keeps the cell rigid
