B1.8 Evolution Flashcards
State Darwin’s theory of evolution.
Darwin’s theory of evolution States that it takes place through natural selection.
State the theory of evolution.
The theory of evolution States that all species of living things alive today evolved from the first simple forms that first developed more that 3 billion years ago.
What was Lamarck’s theory of evolution?
Lamarck believed that individual animals adapted and evolved to suit their environment.
What does the term ‘inheritance of acquired characteristic’ mean?
Useful changes or characteristic that organisms develop during their lives to help them survive are passed on to their offspring.
Why was Lamarck’s theory not accepted?
- There was no evidence.
- People didn’t like the idea of being descended from a worm.
- People did not believe that changes in their body is passed on to their offspring.
What does natural selection mean?
Only the animals and plants lost suited to their environment - the fittest will survive to breed and so pass on their characteristics.
Why did it take time before Darwin’s theory was accepted?
- A conflict with the belief that God created everything.
- The evidence provided was not sufficient.
- Not sufficient fossil records to prove his theory.
- No mechanism for explaining variety.
What is mutation?
A change in the genetic material (DNA) which results in a new form of a gene.
What is classification?
Classification is the organisation of living things into groups according to their similarities.
