Q

What’s sexual reproduction?

A

the fusion of 2 gametes (male and female). The mixture of genetic information = variety in offspring!

Q

What’s asexual reproduction?

A

NO fusion of gametes and only 1 individual is needed as the parent. No mixing of genetic info so NO VARIATION IN OFFSPRING.

Q

What happens when the male and female gamete fuse?

A

It becomes a zygote! This becomes an embryo with a full set of 46 chromosomes! Half from mum, half from dad!

Q

What is the cloning technique of tissue culture? (asexual)

A

It’s using small groups of cells from part of a plant

Q

What are embryo transplants? (asexual)

A

Splitting apart cells from a developing animal embryo before they become specialised, then transporting the identical embryos into host mothers

Q

What’s a host mother?

A

A mother that births a baby but didn’t have sex

like the Virgin Mary but more sciencey

Q

What are the 5 steps of adult cell cloning? (asexual)

A
  1. nucleus removed from UNfertilised egg cell
  2. nucleus from adult body cell inserted into egg cell
  3. electric shock activates cell division to form embryo cells
  4. embryo (whilst cell ball) inserted into womb of adult female
  5. BABY! (identical to animal that donated body cell)

14
Q

Why are genes transferred to cells of animals, plants or microorganisms at early stages?

16
Q

What are crops called that have had their genes modified?

A

Genetically modified crops (GM)

17
Q

What are examples of GM crops?

A

ones resistant to insect attack or herbicides

18
Q

What do GM crops usually show an increase in?

A

yield

19
Q

What are the concerns about GM crops?

A
  • effect on populations of wild flowers and insects

- uncertainty about effects of eating GM crops on human health
