B1.5 Energy in Biomass Flashcards
What are detrital food chains?
Food chains that start with dead material or waste.
What is a detritivore?
An organism that eats dead material like dead leaves.
What are decomposers?
They decompose the bodies of other organisms but do not eat them.
What is biomass?
Biomass is the amount of material in an organism when it is dry.
What is excretion?
The removal of waste products.
How can energy be lost?
As heat through cellular respiration
Egestion, excretion or death where energy goes to detritus feeders.
Not all of the animal being consumed as a food source.
What is decomposition?
When something rots.
Give an example of a decomposer.
Bacteria
Fungi
How do humans impact the carbon cycle?
Deforestation
Burning fossil fuels
Soil degredation
what are 4 elements living organisms contain?
carbon oxygen hydrogen nitrogen
how do the elements from the organisms return to the environment
animals die- microorganisms cause materials to decay. this process of decay releases elements back to the soil air or water for plants which are then eaten by animals
