Q
Why are the kidneys important ?
A
Filters out toxic waste products from the blood
Regulates blood water levels and minerals
2
Q
How does the kidney do both roles ?
A
- Water, glucose, salts and urea pushed into the Bowman’s capsize
- Red blood cells and proteins are to large to leave the blood
- Ultra filtration (above)
- Selective re abosrbtion (bellow)
- All glucose reabsorbed
- Some water and minerals/ salts are reabsorbed ( depending on ADH levels)
- Leftover water, salt and urea=urine stored in the bladder
3
Q
What is ADH
A
Anti diuretic hormone
4
Q
Where is ADH released ?
A
Pituitary gland and results in the kidneys reabsorbing more water back into the blood
5
Q
What is the process with ADH called ?
A
Osmoregulation
