Why are the kidneys important ?

A

Filters out toxic waste products from the blood
Regulates blood water levels and minerals

How does the kidney do both roles ?

A
  • Water, glucose, salts and urea pushed into the Bowman’s capsize
  • Red blood cells and proteins are to large to leave the blood
  • Ultra filtration (above)
  • Selective re abosrbtion (bellow)
  • All glucose reabsorbed
  • Some water and minerals/ salts are reabsorbed ( depending on ADH levels)
  • Leftover water, salt and urea=urine stored in the bladder

A

Anti diuretic hormone
