B11.9 Plant Hormones Flashcards
1
Q
What hormone responds to light and gravity in plants ?
A
Auxin
2
Q
What does auxin do ?
A
Stimulates the growth of shoots/ roots
Slows the growth of shoots/ roots
3
Q
What is the response to light called ?
A
Photo tropism
4
Q
Where is auxin found in the plant ?
A
Found in the tips of shoots
5
Q
Where does auxin build up on ?
A
Builds up on shaded(darker) side
6
Q
What does auxin cause?
A
Shaded cells to elongate
Shoots bend towards the light source
7
Q
If the end of a plant is covered what would you expect to see ?
A
It does not respond to light
8
Q
What is geotropsim ?
A
The response to gravity
9
Q
How would auxin work with a new seed ?
A
- The auxin is evenly distributed in the newly germinated root and shoot
- auxin falls to the bottom of the roots and shoots due to gravity ( geotropism) so the auxin is unevenly distributed
- Auxin inhibits root growth so the root will grow downwards but the auxin stimulates the shoot to grow upwards
