B12- Reproduction Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction involve?
Sexual reproduction involves the joining (fusion) of the male and female gametes formed by meiosis
What does sexual reproduction lead to?why?(plants and animals)
leads to the formation of non-identical cells, sperm and egg cells in animals, and pollen and egg cells in flowering plants because of Meiosis
What is asexual reproduction?
In asexual reproduction, there is no no fusion of gametes and only one parent
What does asexual reproduction lead to?why?
Leads to genetically identical offsprings (clones) because there is no mixing of genetic information as only mitosis is involved
What are the main type of organisms that reproduce sexually?
multicellular organisms
What are the main type of organisms that reproduce asexually?
unicellular organisms
Alleles
Are versions of a gene
Homozygous allele
Two identical alleles e.g BB or bb
Heterozygous alleles
Two different alleles e.g Bb, bB
Phenotype
Describes the physical appearance due to genotypes (black fur or brown fur)
Genotype
Describes the alleles present or genetic material make up (homozygous or heterozygous)
What is the name of the type of genetic diagram used to show genetic inheritance?
Punnet square
