B12 Homeostasis in action Flashcards
What monitors the body temperature?
The thermoregulatory centre in brain
What things in our body do we need to keep constant
4
control amount of water
control about of ions
control body temp
control blood glucose levels
Define homestasis.
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment.
What does your body do if you get too cold?
Blood vessels that supply the capillaries in the skin contract. = VASOCONSTRICTION
- to reduce heat loss through the surface of the skin.
- Blood flow in skin capillaries decreases
- Heat loss from skin decreases
- Arterioles get narrower
`What additional things does your body do when you feel to cold?
Thermoregulatory detects and responds by:
- producing less sweat so less water is loss through evaporation
- muscles contract and relax rapidly causing you to shiver (contraction needs a lot of respiration (exothermic)
What does your body do if you get too hot?
Blood vessels that supply the capillaries in the skin dilate.= VASODILATION
- blood vessels open up and get wider
- Blood flow in skin capillaries decreases
-Arterioles get widerrrrrr
`What additional things does your body do when you feel to cold?
Thermoregulatory detects and responds by:
sweat to cool down
and flushing to cool down
Define metabolism
he chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.
Define egested.
the removal of undigested food
Define excretion.
The removal of toxic materials, the waste products of metabolism and excess materials.
What is removed via the kidneys?
excess water
ions
and urea
What are the 2 main waste products produced by humans? and what can build up of these two lead to?
carbon dioxide
urea (yellow part of urine)
build up of these two can be deadly!
Where is urea produced?
It is produced in the liver
What is urea produced as?
As a by-product as you breakdown excess amino acids
What can build up of urea cause?
build up can cause severe damage to cells and needs to be filtered out of body by your kidneys
How does urea leave the body?
Waste urea leaves body in urine.
What happens in the liver?
waste amino acids are converted to urea
what happens in kidneys?
excess water and salts removed in urine via kidneys
what happens in the lungs?
water leaves the body via the lungs when you breathe out.
How is co2 transported from where it is produced to where it is removed?
C02 moves down the conc gardient fromyour blood
into alveoli
and when you breathe out co2 leaves the body
from lungs
Where is urea made?
liver after breakdown of amino acids
