B11 Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
- Made up of glands that secrete chemicals called hormones into the bloodstream
- blood carries hormones into the organ
- which it is processed by the hormones
What is the role for pituitary in the Endrocine gland?
- controls growth in children
- stimulates thyroid gland to make thyroxine controls the rate of metabolism
- women - stimulates ovaries, release eggs
- men - stimulates testes to make sperm
What is the role for thyroid in the Endrocine gland?
Controls the metabolic rate
What is the role for the pancreas in the Endrocine gland?
Controls the levels of gluclose in the blood
What is the role for the adrenal in the Endrocine gland?
Controls the levels of gluclose in the blood
What is the role for the ovaries in the Endrocine gland?
Controls development of female secondary sexual characteristics in the menstrual cycle
What is the role of of testes in the Endrocine gland?
Controls development of the male secondary sexual characterisitcs of the production of sperm
What causes type 1 diabetes?
- if pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin without it your blood gluclose will get very high
What causes type 2 diabetes?
- obesity
- lack of exercise
How do you treat type 1 diabetes?
- replacement insulin before meals
- being careful of the levels of carbs
- exercise
- insulin injections
How to cure type 1 diabetes?
- pacreas transplant
How do you treat type 2 diabetes?
- eat a balanced diet controlling the amount of carbs
- loosing weight
- doing regular exercise
- drugs that:
1. Help insulin work better
2. Help the pancreas make more insulin
3. Reduce the amount of gluclose - use insulin injections
What is the menstural cycle?
Each month eggs begin to mature in the ovary at the same time uterus produces a thickened lining ready for a pregnancy every 28 days its released known as ovulation
What are the hormones controlling the menstrual cycle?
- follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) causes the eggs in the ovary to mature
- luteinising hormone (LH) stimulates the release of the egg at ovulation
- oestrogen and progesterone stimulate the build-up and maintenance of the uterus lining.
What is contraception?
Preventing from pregnancy meaning to preven the egg and sperm meeting a fertilised egg implanting in the uterus
What are ways of using hormones to prevent pregnancy?
Oral contraceptives: contraceptive pill use femal hormones preventing oregnancy contains low dose of oesrogen and progesterone
Pill hormone: stops from uterus lining development preventing implantation
What is the chemical method?
Chemicals that kill or disable sperm are known as spermicides. They are readily available but are not very effective at preventing pregnancy.
What is the barrier method?
Barrier methods of contraception prevent the sperm reaching the egg.
A condom is a thin latex sheath placed over the penis during intercourse to collect the semen and prevent the egg and sperm meeting. Condoms offer some protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and HIV/ AIDS. They can, however, get damaged and let sperm through.
What is intrauterine devices?
Small structure inserted into the uterus lasting 3-5 years can be removed if they want to be pregnant containing copper preventing early embryos
What is abstinence?
Rythym method abstaining from intercourse around ovulation or the egg oviducts meaning sperm cannot fertilise no side effectS
What is surgical method?
Being surgically sterillised in the sperm being cut and tied sperm preventing the semen call vasectomy when the womens oviduct is cut or tied to prevent from sperm reaching the egg gives permanent contraception
