What are they drug categories and what do they do
Stimulants - increase brain activity leading to a feeling of heightened perception and alertness.
Depressants- decrease brain activity making you feel tired and slows reactions.
Painkillers- block nerve impulses reducing pain.
Performance inhancers- increase muscle development
Hallucinogens- distort what is seen and heard
Why does addiction cause a higher tolerance to drugs
When the body becomes more used to the drug it develops a tolerance needing a higher dose to get the same effect.
What physiological and physical problems does drug withdrawal cause
Cravings for the drug.
Sweating, shaking,nausea
What can excess alcohol cause
Unconsciousness, coma or death
Short term effects of alcohol
Lack of balance and muscle control Blurred vision and slurred speech Poor judgement Drowsiness Blood vessels widen increasing blood flow leading to heat loss- vasodilation
Long term effects of alcohol
Liver damage from working too hard to remove toxic alcohol form the body
Brain damage from dehydration

Cancer or the mouth, throat, oesophagus and lungs.

What does smoking damage and what does this line
The cilia which lines the airways
What does damage to the cilia do.
Prevents the cilia from being able to remove mucus, tar and dirt from the lungs causing a ‘smokers cough ‘, this can cause emphysema and damage to the alveoli.
What are the main dangerous substances in cigarettes
Tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous
It is picked up by the blood instead of oxygen meaning the blood is carrying much less oxygen, this causes breathlessness and can lead to heart disease
Why is consuming tar dangerous
It contains irritants and carcinogens(causing cancer).
