B1 Biology - the nervous system Flashcards
what is the main job of the nervous system?
enables you to react to your surroundings and deal with how your body behaviour.
what type of messages are hormones?
chemical substances
where would you find receptors which would respond to
1) to a loud noise
11) touching a hot oven
111) a strong perfume
1) ears
2) hands
3) nose
what does a neurone do?
a neurone is is a single cell that has the ability to become hyperactive and pass a nerve impulse along to a muscle
what do motor neurones do?
they carry information from the CNS to the rest of your body.
what do sensory neurones do?
they are responsible for converting information into electrical impulses.
why are reflexes important?
they help you avoid danger or harm. they also help your body function
what are receptors?
groups of cells that are sensitive to a stimulus
what do receptors do?
they change stimulus energy into electrical impulses
what do relay neurones do?
they carry signals from the sensory neurones to the motor neurones
what is the synapse?
the connection between two neurones
where does the reflex arc sit?
in the spinal cord
