B1 Biology - pathogens, fighting disease, vaccinations and drugs Flashcards
what are the micro-organisms called that enter your body and cause disease?
pathogens
how does bacteria make you feel ill?
it damages your cells and produces toxins
how do viruses make you feel ill?
they replicate themselves by invading your cells, and make many copies of themselves, the new cells will release new viruses
what do white blood cells do?
they travel in your blood and attack microbes
how do white blood cells attack microbes?
3 types
- they can engulf cells and digest them
- they produce antibodies that kill off cells
- they also produce antitoxins
what do injections put in to your body?
small amounts of inactive micro-organisms, they carry antigens that then the antibodies will attack
what do antibiotics do?
they kill the bacteria without killing your body cells.
what can’t antibiotics kill? and why?
viruses - they grow using your body cells which makes it difficult to destroy the viruses without killing your body cells
what temp are micro-organisms kept at?
25 degrees
