Azygous System of Veins Flashcards
Tributaries- 1st Intercostal Space: Drain Point
Into the brachiocephalic or vertebral vein
Tributaries- Superior Intercostal Vein: Left Side characteristics
2 or 3 spaces drain into left brachiocephalic vein, usually crossing the aortic arch and runs in between the left phrenic and vagus nerve
Tributaries- Superior Intercostal vein: Right side characteristics
2 or 3 spaces drain into terminal portion of azygos veinf
Tributaries- Azygous Vein Proper: Location
Begins in abdomen as contiuation of right ascending lumbar vein
Tributaries- Azygous Vein proper: Pathway
Passes through the aortic hiatus and runs in front of the vertebral column
What does the Asygous vein proper receive?
Right subcostal vein, ower 7 or 8 right intercostal veins, hemiazygos, accessory hemiazygos veins, and several esophageal, mediastinal, pericardial, and bronchial veins and right superior intercostal veins
Where does the Azygos vein empty?
Superior Vena Cava, arches anterosuperiorly to the right primary bronchus to enter the superior vena cava
Hemiazygous Vein: Location and pathway
Begins as a contiuation of the left ascending lumbar vein
Enters the thorax through the left crus of the diaphragm
Hemiazygos vein: Drain point
Drains Left subcostal and lover 3 intercostal veins
Hemiazygos vein: Emptying point
Crosses TV9 To empty into the azygos vein
Accessory Hemiazygos vein: Drain and Emptying point
Drains the middle intercostal veins on th eleft, crossing TV8 to empy into the azygos vein
Azygos System: Purpose
Connects portal and systemic pathways by way of the esophageal veins
Important collateral pathway between superior and inferior venae cavae
