Boundaries of axilla
Apex: cervico-axillary canal Base: axillary fossa (armpit) Anterior: Pectoral muscles Posterior: formed by the subscapularis, latissimus dorsi, and teres major muscles Medial: formed by the ribs, intercostal muscles and serratus anterior Lateral: formed by the intertubercular (bicipital) groove of the humerus
Branches of first segment of axillary artery
Superior thoracic artery (supplies muscles of first and second intercostal spaces)
Second segment axillary artery branches
Thoracoacromial artery and lateral thoracic artery
Third segment axillary artery branches
Subscapular artery (branches into thoracodorsal and circumflex scapular artery), posterior humeral circumflex, and anterior humeral circumflex
Axillary vein, made up of brachial (orange) and basilic veins
Humeral (lateral) nodes lie along the lateral wall of the axilla, medial and posterior to the axillary vein
