Axial Skeleton Flashcards
What is the axial skeleton?
Central framework of the body, keeps us upright
What are bones made up of?
Connective tissue (strength)
Nerves and blood vessels
What is found on the end of bones?
Articular cartilage (helps joints move easily where they connect)
What type of tissues is found inside blood vessels?
Epithelial tissue which regulates what goes in and out of the body
What is the functional unit of the bones?
Osteon
What is Osteon responsible for?
Nutrient flow and communication through the bone cells
What are the 6 functions of the bones?
To shield organs
Store and release fat (energy)
Produce red blood cells
Store and release minerals
Facilitate movement
Keeps us upright (supporting body)
What are long bones and give an example?
More long than wide (a shaft with ends)
Ex. Humerus
What are short bones and give an example?
Cube-shaped
Ex. Carpal and tarsals
What are flat bones and give an example?
Thin, flattened, curved
Ex. Sternum
What are irregular bones and give an example?
Various shaped
Ex. Vertebrae
What are the two type of bones that make up the gross anatomy of bones?
Compact bone
Spongy bone
What is a compact bone?
Dense outer layer
Looks smooth and solid
What is spongy bone?
Has a mesh of bony spines called trabeculae
Trabeculae is filled with marrow
What part of the bone grows?
Diaphysis: bone shaft
Where does growth happen during development?
At the epiphyses: bone ends
What is the metaphysis?
Between epiphyses and disphysis contains growth plate in children
What is the growth plate?
made of cartilage and allows for growth (ossifies in adults)
What is the medullar cavity?
Hollow space, contains yellow marrow, where bones store fat
What is the periosteum on long bones?
Outer membrane, attachment for tendons and ligaments (except where joint are)
What are the Sharpey’s fibres on the long bones?
Anchor periosteum to bone (collagen fibers)
What do tendons attach vs. Ligaments?
T: Muscle to bone
L: bone to bone
What is the endosteum of the long bone membrane ?
Inner lining, aids growth and remodelling
Define tuberosity
Large, round and rough projection
