frontal bone
forms forehead, roofs of eye sockets (orbits), and most of the front part of the cranial floor
parietal bone
form the sides + roof of the cranial activity; separated on top of skull by the sagittal suture
temporal bones
forms lower sides of the cranium + part of the cranial floor; external auditory meatus (ear canal) is located within these bones
occipital bones
forms posterior part + most of the cranial base; foramen magnum passes through this bone; occipital condyles are on either side of the foramen magnum that connect w/ the first vertebrae
sphenoid bone
butterfly bone: “keystone” of the skull; sella turcica - depression in sphenoid that hold pituitary gland
ethmoid bone
found directly above sphenoid; crista galli - holds the membranes that surround the brain (dura mater)
