contraction causes flatterning of diaphram expansion of thoracic cavity , increases pressure in the abdominopelvic cavity

flexes vertebral column , compresses abdominal wall used in forced exhalation
O: superior surface of pubis near symphysis
I : xiphoid process of sternum inferior surfaces of ribs 5-7

UA: lateral flexion of vertebral column, rotation of vertebral column to the opposite side
BA: flexes vertebral column and compresses abdominal wall , used in force exhalation
