Axel Honneth's Recognition Theory Flashcards

Q

What is disrespect? Is it possible to eliminate disrespect in social interactions?

A

Disrespect is when one’s identity is not recognized in a specific sphere. e.g. love– no reciprocal care. (Could be in physical abuse) One is not recognized in the work they’ve done in society (devalued exchange) (pied piper) It’s possible but it would be in the cause of freedom and individual identity. If people have the same thoughts/ ideas, there might be no disrespect in any interaction we engage ourselves with. No disrespect if we have the same values, but we are all unique. A learning situation.

Q

Do the spheres of recognition occur linearly?

A

It occurs in a linear progression (historically) from a child to a worker participating in society. However, they are constantly modified and realigned to suit our individual needs and circumstances. They are also going to happen to a non-linear form of fashion (because of the introduction of antecedent recognition). We are all participants of these spheres of recognition and rights. A child, a friend, consumer, and contributor to the democratic engagement of different ideas. An investor and a consumer.
