46,000 Indians from the Eastern states are forced to relocate to the plains by the American government and were promised that they wouldn’t be moved again (because the whites didn’t want to live there)

What was the Trade and Intercourse Act?
Sets out the Permanent Indian Frontier which divided Indian territory from the Eastern States (Isolates them) (stops Trade & Intercourse)
What happened in 1846?
Oregon is bought by the US from the UK and the Donner Party
What happened to the Donner Party?
300 people migrated to California but got “snowed in” and they were forced to cannibalism until the survivors were rescued

The Mormons - eventually settled in Salt Lake City (to become Utah)

American wins the war against Mexico and gold was found in California
What happened in 1849?
The gold rush - Mass migration to California

The estimated 90,000 miners who traveled to California in 1849 in search of gold

The Indians Appropriations Act and The Fort Laramie Treaty
What was the Indians Appropriations Act?
The US government created resevations so whites could take Indians lands. Indians were paid to move to smaller lands where they could be ‘civilaised’ and farm land
What was the Fort Laramie Treaty?
An agreement between Indians and government that Indians would not attack settlers using Oregon Trail - in exchange for large areas of land being given to Indians “for all time”
