Aviana - Anesthesia Flashcards
What is important about the Palatine fissure/ choana?
It’s a great place to get samples! It connects the upper respiratory system with parts of the GI tract
Where do foreign bodies usually get lodged?
Tracheal bifurcation
How can we think of the syrinx (voice box) at the tracheal bifurcation in the bird?
As a system of membranes, that whenever air goes thru, it pushes one side toward that membrane and that’s what produces sound
What connects the bronchi with the air sacs?
Ostium (holes)
Where does gas exchange occur?
From the parabronchi arise air capillaries where gas exchange occurs as the air flows through
When does gas exchange occur in respiration?
As air passes through lungs during both inspiration and expiration
Posterior and anterior air sacs expand during ________;
Whereas posterior and anterior air sacs contract during ________.
Inspiration;
Expiration
What % should we start a bird on gas/inhaled induction anesthesia (isoflurane)?
5%, then reduce progressively as bird becomes anesthetized (DO NOT block the nares)
What is the maintenance isoflurane rate usually, regardless of species?
2-3%
How should we go about recovery?
Stop isoflurane, continue with O2 for a few minutes, hold the bird upright;
Remove tube when bird has recovered
butorphanol will delay recovery
When the bird inspires, where does most of the air go? (Group)
Caudal group, but a little will go into the lungs…
T or F:
Bird lungs do not expand. They’re rigid and adhered to ribs.
Trueee
How does air from the cranial group of air sacs move out of the body?
Via the trachea
How does air from the caudal group of air sacs move into the cranial group of air sacs?
During expiration, it moves thru the lungs (gas exchange)
When should you perform an air sac canulation?
Emergency (severe dyspnea)
Programmed surgery on oral cavity or enucleation
Diagnostic procedure
