What kind of Avian species do Veterinary practices see? Name 5 different ones.
Companion Avian Species. Some Hookbills are Parakeets, Cockatiels, Cockatoos, African Greys, Lovebirds, Macaws, Senegels, Conures, Amazon.
Finches, canaries, waxbills, mynahs (Passerine)
General Care for Birds. What should be known.
Very intelligent, social, and needs a lot of interaction. They become easily bored and can lead to feather picking.
What is a good way to keep your bird occupied?
Keep the tv on, make sure they have plenty of toys, encourage foraging behavior.
What kind of household items should be avoided?
Aerosols and perfumes, cleaners, teflon. Make sure not to smoke around the bird. They can also get heavy metal toxicity from paint, blinds. Mainly Zinc and Lead. Toxic house plants.
What can be used to benefit a bird?
UVB lights and humidifiers
What kind of cage should the bird be in and what should go inside cage?
Appropriate size cage based on birds needs and different sized perches to help reduce overgrown nails and foot issues.
What do birds consume in the wild?
insects, seeds, fruits, vegetable, meat, nectar
What should a birds diet consist of?
Pellets, veggies, fruits, breads, cereals, meats, Insects, Nectar(lories/lorikeets only)
What should be avoided and or given minimally?
Seeds and nuts, though some birds need to essential oils found in some nuts. NEVER give caffeine, chocolate, or avocados. Avoid salty food and food with a lot of sugar.
What can be given along with diet?
Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation
How many times a year should a bird be seen by a DVM? Why?
Annual to Bi-Annual Check-ups. Good thorough exam to look for underlying problems. Monitor birds weight. Regular beak/wing/nail trims when needed.
What are 3 different fecal profiles?
Gram Stain, Fecal Digestive Profile, and Ova and Parasites
What are the two bird vaccines?
Pacheo and Polyoma
What are screening test run for birds?
Psittacosis/Chlamydiophila. Zoonotic and Reportable. Can be given to humans. More of a concern with multi bird households. Cultures are also done on birds.
