Autumn 1 (P8) Flashcards
Distance
The distance from one point to the other
Displacement
Distance without change of direction. The direct distance from point A to point B
Vecors
A vector quantity has a magnitude and direction
Scaler
A scaler quantity has magnitude only
Scale diagram
More than 1 force reacts on an object
Equal and opposite forces
When 2 objects interact with each other with equal/opposite forces
Friction
A force which pushes a car back is friction. This is opposite to the driving force
Balanced forces
When 2 or more forces have the same amount of force therefore they cancel each other out. It is stationary
Unbalanced forces
When the resultant force is 0 the force acting on the object is unbalanced resulting in possible movement
Resultant force
A single force which has the same effect on all the other forces. If its 0 its balanced
Centre of mass
An object is the point at which its mass can be thought of as being concentrated
Suspended equilibrium
Finds the centre of gravity when suspending an object
Parallelogram of forces
Shows how 2 vectors produce a resultant force
Resolution of Forces
Shows how an object moves on an inclined slope.
Equilibrium
An object at rest
Frequency
The number of waves crests passing a fixed point every second
Period of wave
The time it takes to complete one cycle
Amplitude
Height of a wave from the rest position
Longitudinal wave
A wave where vibrations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer
Transverse wave
A wave where the vibrations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
Displacement
Distance in a given direction
Wavelength
The distance from one wave crest to the next
