Autonomic Nervous System Intro Flashcards
What system is the ANS part of?
Peripheral Nervous System
-Peripheral (outside CNS)
Name the X3 sub-divisions of ANS
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
- Enteric-Controls GI behaviour
What X2 neurons are required in ANS?
- Sensory- Visceral Efferent
- Motor- Visceral Efferent
How would a patient describe pain associated with an organ?
- Dull
- NOT localised
What is the function of Sympathetic NS?
- Releases Noradrenaline
- Inc. HR (> vasodilation) and Breathing Rate
- Dec. Digestive Processes
- Pupil dilation
What is Sympathetic Outflow?
- In Sympathetic NS
- Exit of neurons down the spinal cord
- Then travels > Ventral Roots> Sympathetic Ganglion (Pre and Post)
What segments have Lateral Horns?
-T1 and T2 parts of Intervertebral Column
What type of innervation does both Sympathetic and Parasympathetic have?
-Motor Innervation (Movement)
What is the function of the Parasympathetic System?
- Releases Acetylcholine
- Dec HR and Breathing Rate
- Inc. Digestive Processes
What type of Outflow does the Parasympathetic Outflow have?
- Craniosacral Outflow
- Neurons begin at cranial nerves
- -Then travels > Ventral Roots> Sympathetic Ganglion (Pre and Post)
What do Sacro Spinal and Vagus Nerves do?
Sacro spinal- supply lower body organs
Vagus nerves- supply upper body organs
