Autoimmune Disease Flashcards
Which cells indicate the cell mediated response?
T cells
Which cells indicate a humoral response?
B cells
What is the major difference between T cells and B cells?
T cells recognize processed Ag with MHC - produce cytokines and release granules
B cells recognize free Ag via Ig receptor - Ig mediated destruction
What are some factors that can predispose one to autoimmune disease?
- Genetic
- Women more than men
- Chemical changes
- Climate
- Infectious agents
- Immune dysregulation
What initiates an autoimmune response?
- Incomplete deletion of self reactive cells
- Stimulation of normally anergic self reactive cells (microbe and self antigen simultaneously)
- Altered regulation of anergic self reactive cells
What are two ways that normally anergic self reactive T cells can become active?
- APC reacts to microbe and self antigen simultaneously (microbe leads to costimulation)
- Microbe creates mimic self-antigen on APC surface
Which autoimmune diseases are systemic?
- SLE
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis
Which autoimmune diseases are organ specific?
- IDDM
2. MS
Loss of which type of tolerance would likely result in a systemic autoimmune disease?
Central tolerance
