Autoflight Flashcards
What is lateral basic mode of the autopilot?
Holds what you have for 3 seconds and rolls out if AOB is greater than 6° but less than 45°.
How do you know the autopilot is capturing?
Reverse video: Goes from white to black letters on a green background to green letters.
White = armed Green = captured
What happens when you hit GA?
- FD commands 10° nose up.
- Commands wings level sub mode.
- All FD armed modes are discarded.
- If doing an LNAV aprch it will cancel LNAV.
If you hit “APRCH” on FGCP while on a VOR approach, what do you get?
When should you hit “APRCH”?
- 0.3 sensitivity.
- When cleared for the approach.
What are the components of the AFCS?
- 2 FGMs
- FGCP
- Roll autopilot actuator unit (APAU)
- Pitch APAU
- Roll capstan
- Pitch capstan
- Yaw damper actuator unit (YDAU).
- Autopilot disconnect warning lights.
How many FGMs?
What are their roles?
Where are they located?
What happens if one malfunctions?
2
FGM 1 controls AP and YD
FGM 2 monitors
IFC
Autopilot disconnects (Can’t do CAT II)
What are the functions of the AFCS?
- FD commands
- Autopilot vertical and lateral guidance
- AP disengagement indications
- YAW damping and co-ordination
- AP pitch trim
- Flap pitch trim
When should an approach normally arm on the FMS?
At 50nm
When should APPR illuminate on the FMS?
At FAF
When about to enter a hold, when does the FMS switch from “HOLD ARMED” to “HOLDING”?
15 seconds prior to reaching the fix
How do you cancel overfly (to ensure smart turn)?
Select waypoint on FMS (LSK to the left of waypoint). Then hit cancel overfly on the right LSK. This will remove the star next to the waypoint.
If in a hold at a transition fix and you’ve been cleared for an approach what must you do to properly fly the approach?
REMEMBER: HOLDING FIXES ARE DESIGNED AS OVERFLY FIXES! THEREFORE FMS WILL NOT SMART TURN
Go to manoeuvers page and select PROCEED (this will be available once the NAV page shows HOLDING at the top). If you have not arrived at the hold yet and the NAV page still shows HOLD ARMED, then DISARM HOLD is the selection you would use here.
- Prior to selecting PROCEED, the NEXT fix on your NAV page would have been blank. Once PROCEED is selected, the NEXT leg should fill in automatically with the next fix in the flight plan (this needs to be verified to ensure the FMS will take you where you are cleared to go).
- The FMS will now complete the current holding pattern before proceeding to the next fix, however, if the hold fix is still defined as an overfly (PEMSU*), the FMS will not smart turn at PEMSU as ATC expects you to in order to complete the approach transition. So you will need to CNCL OVRFLY to ensure the smart turn happens at PEMSU, because of the 90 degree turn at PEMSU.
If holding on the initial fix and cleared for the approach, how do you exit the hold to conduct approach?
What should you see as the next waypoint in the FMS?
Go to manoeuvers page and select PROCEED (this will be available once the NAV page shows HOLDING at the top). If you have not arrived at the hold yet and the NAV page still shows HOLD ARMED, then DISARM HOLD is the selection you would use here (remember to watch your inbound track as you may need to cancel the overfly if required, to allow a smart turn at GOREG).
The next waypoint should be the approach label.
What is the difference between HDG HOLD and HDG SEL?
HDG HOLD holds an AOB. HDG SEL turns to a heading.
When doing a localizer only approach, what should the FMS show upon LOC interception? Will the needles change to blue or stay pink?
LOC STEERING ACTIVE
Pink
