Differences: Ed Code vs. DSM-V

A

IDEA uses “Autism” while DSM uses “Autism Spectrum Disorder”

DSM present more detailed behavioral descriptions for each symptom

IDEA specifies that symptoms must adversely affect the child’s educational performance while DSM focuses on impairment in social, occupational, etc.

DSM requires specification of severity levels for two behavioral domains

What is adaptive behavior

A

The performance of daily activities required for personal and social sufficiency.

2 major facets:
1. the degree to which the individual is able to function and maintain their independence.
2. the degree to which they satisfactorily meet the culturally imposed demands of personal and social responsibility.
