How does one diagnose autism spectrum disorders?
- History (behavior difference across 2 domains)
- Observation (home, school
- Cognition global cognitive abilities, specific cognitive skills)
- Speech and language, OT
- Behavior and mental health (depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD)
- Family assessment
- Medical investigations (genetic, ?imaging, ?EEG, metabolic screening)
Indications for neurological work-up in autism
Late regression >24 months
Clinic suspicion of seizures
Fluctuating clinical course
Read red flags for autism
No seriously, read them
Treatment of autism
Multi-disciplinary team
Support family
No miracle cure
Increase awareness (both for research and public)
