Autism Flashcards
Explain the autism
Autism is a developmental disorder that develops in the first two years and is characterized by three features:
Social abnormality: there is an inability to respond in social interaction and to develop relationships.
Language abnormalities: language development is severely delayed. There is an avoidance for communication, they do not engage in chats and they make up new words.
Stereotypical and repetitive patterns of behavior: must follow routines and are overly attached to objects.
Early sighs of autisms in children are a difficulty to maintain eye-to-eye contact, to imitate or communicate. There may be retardation and/or low performance on some cognitive skills and high on others. Autistic can also have a difficulty on understanding other peoples mental state.
Researchers show through neuroimaging that there is a reduction in frontal lobe size and activation. And, also the region of amygdala. This make autistic people unable to recognize emotional facial expressions, although they may be able to recognize basic emotions.
Asperger’s syndrome is a milder form of autism. Is characterized by poor social skills and obsessional and narrow rage of interests.
