Q

Describe the process of selective attention

A

The process of selective attention determines Which events we become conscious of.
Attention can be controlled: automatically, by instructions, according on the demands of the task we are performing.
The dichotic listening techniqueconsists of the simultaneous presentation of two different verbal messages, one in each ear, simultaneously. Message on the unattended ear can affect our behavior without being conscious (implicit memory)
There are three models of selective attention:
Early selection models:unattended stimuli are not fully processed and so they play no part in information processing.
Late selection models all information is attended to and there are perceptual analysed and are selected later on in the information processing chain.
Inattentional blindness:
When we don’t pay close attention, we can miss even the most conspicuous events.

Example of selective attention
Having a conversation with a friend in a crowded place. Reading your book on a public transport bus.
