WHAT IS THE UNITED NATIONS
The United Nations is an international organisation created in 1945 that seeks to promote international cooperation.
After World War II it was hoped that this international organisation, devoted to world peace, would prevent war and horrors such as the Holocaust from happening again.
Head quarters in new york owned by the people of the world
The UN has its own flag, showing a map of the world encircled by olive branches, which are a symbol of peace.
The UN has 193 members and is committed to 3 main goals:
International peace and security in the world.
Helping nations work together to assist poor people
Providing a central point where nations can come together
BRANCHES OF UN
General assembly- Debate and make policy on global issues. This is global governance.
Trusteeship council- Assists member states to maintain independence
international court of justice- Judicial arm of the UN, it is in charge of settling disputes.
WHAT DOES THE UN AMBASSADOR DO
UN has ambassadors to raise awareness of global issues.
The Security Council
The Security Council is responsible for settling disputes and securing world peace.
It has 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.
Permanent members are:China,France,Russian Federation,the United Kingdom,andthe United States of America
The 10 non-permanent nations are from any other member of the UN and they serve two year terms.
AUSTRALIA’S RILE AS A MEMBER OF THE UN
Australia was one of the first 51 countries to become a member of the UN when it began in 1945.
