Auditory Processing Disorders Flashcards
What is auditory processing disorder?
struggle to process auditory information and respond accordingly
What can auditory processing be described as?
invisible behavior; involves interpreting, recalling, and storing information; it is effectively and efficiently using what we hear
According to ASHA, APD difficulties include
struggling to discrminate sounds and understanding signals that enter one ear
What is S.I.F.T.E.R.?
A questionnaire used to determine the impact APD has on a child’s education
What tests are used to assess an individual for APD?
Buffalo Model, Spoken Language Processing Model; Bellis/Ferre Model
What categories does the Buffalo Model assess during an APD evaluation?
decoding, tolerance fading memory, integration (most severe category), and organization
What is decoding?
quickly and correctly process speech by recognizing phonemes.
What is tolerance fading memory?
understanding speech and remembering speech while tolerating background noise
What are decoding tendencies for a child with APD?
delayed articulation; speak slowly; poor expressive and receptive morphology; no phonological awareness; issues getting words
What are tolerance fading memory tendencies for a child with APD?
struggle to form language and with repetitive tasks ; respond quickly; receptive language issues; often self correct themselves; poor at remembering what they hear;
What are academic challenges associated wtih decoding difficulties?
spelling, writing, oral reading fluency, completing written tests, discourse, comprehension
What are academic challenges associated with tolerance fading memory?
distractabiliity; impulsivity; struggle to follow directions and with reading comprehension; poor memory; paying attention; independent reading; discourse
What categories of APD assessment are associated with ADHD?
TFM and organization
What are integration tendencies for a child with APD?
struggle with phonological awareness, articulation, phonics, and expressive and receptive language; have pragmatic challenges; very delayed response
What are academic challenges associated with integration tendencies?
copying geometric shapes; reading; writing; spelling; handwriting
