Audiology Flashcards
Outer Ear (2 parts)
auricle or pinna (outer visable part of ear which funnels sound into the ear canal)
external auditory canal(goes from the pinna to the tympanic membrane or eardrum)
middle ear parts
tympanic membrane: elastic, thin, and cone shaped. Vibrates in respond to sound pressure
Ossicular Chain: suspended in the middle ear by ligaments and is composed of three tiny bones (malleus, incus, and stapes) .
2 small muscles dampen the vibrations of the tympanic membrain and the ossicular chain. the tensor tympani (CN V) and the stapedius (VII)-smallest muscle in the body
Eustacian tube: connects middle ear to nasopharynx. helps maintain equal air pressure within and outside the middle ear.
Inner ear parts
most complex of the three divisions of the ear. system of interconnecting tunnels called labyrinths within the temporal bone. Tunnels are filled with a fluid called perilymph.
2 major structures: vestibular system: equilibrium, body posture, and balance
and
cochlea: snail shaped
Energy is converted into electrical impulses which stimulate the acoustic nerve
Auditory Nervous System
cranial nerve VIII Acoustic nerve picks up neural impulses created by the movement of the hair cells in the cochlea.
Vestibular branch: equilibrium or balance
auditory/acoustic branch: conducts electrical sound impulses from the cochlea to the brain
exits the inner ear through the internal auditory meatus
acoustics
study of sound as a physical event
