Q

What rate is digital audio sampled at?

What is the usual sample rate?

The highest freq audio you can record is ___ of the sample rate

A

1000/second (khz)

44.1 khz (48khz for video)

you can record freq up to half the sample rate

What is gain staging

A

Ensuring signal is at an optimum level along its path through the signal chain

Q

Describe the effects of even and odd harmonics in distortion

A

Even - warm cleaner - harmonics built around ocatves/5ths
Odd - glossy sheen sound - more rich and involve more harmonics

Q

What is the nyquist frequency?

A

It is half of what the song/project is set at

It is the threshold where if crossed over in the digital realm - frequencies can be reflected and introduce new harmonics in the signal (can be either higher or lower in freq)

Q

What is digital aliasing?

How can you counteract unwarted aliasing?

A

New frequencies being created after applying affects to a sampled signal that was not present in the original signal

Can happen when harmonics go past the nyquist frequency

Increase the sample rate of the project (however this results in high CPU usage)

Q

What is the oversampling functions in plug-ins/effects?

A

Increases the sample rate inside the plug-in itself so it doesn’t increase the load of the entire project

Also it introduces an anti-aliasing filter to reduce amt of harmonics above the nyquist freq

*right click the plug-ins and make sure they are turned on

Q

What is the difference between pink and white noise and which one do we use for frequency reference?

What is the pink noise slope?

A

Pink noise is tuned close to what humans perceive as frequency

It is white noise with a low-pass filter

Pink noise slope is the ideal frequency distribution for your track. (a descending slope from low to high frequencies)
